The Fiery Furnace is a maze of narrow sandstone fins. Navigation is difficult because the terrain repeats itself, but the less obvious hazard is underfoot.
Dark, knobbly patches of biological soil crust are communities of cyanobacteria, lichens, mosses and other organisms. They stabilise loose soil, retain moisture and help create conditions in which larger plants can survive.
In dry climates, damaged crust can recover very slowly. A single footprint may break a structure that took years to develop.
That is why route restrictions here are not bureaucratic fussiness. The landscape can appear robust because the rock is massive, while its living surface is exceptionally vulnerable. The Fiery Furnace teaches a useful desert rule: the hardest-looking environment may contain some of the most fragile ground.
