Sunrise Point — How a Hoodoo Begins

From Sunrise Point, the amphitheatre looks as though thousands of towers were placed deliberately in rows. The process is almost the opposite: hoodoos are what remains after surrounding rock is removed.

The colourful Claron Formation contains layers that respond differently to water. Rainwater dissolves some calcium-rich rock, while water entering cracks freezes and expands. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles widen fractures. The plateau edge breaks into walls, then windows, then isolated spires.

Bryce sits at an elevation where freezing nights and thawing days are common enough to make frost weathering especially effective. That climatic “sweet spot” helps explain why the concentration of hoodoos is so unusual.

The view is therefore a snapshot of retreat. The rim moves backward over time, and individual spires eventually collapse. Sunrise does not illuminate a finished monument. It illuminates erosion in progress.
