Island in the Sky is a high mesa bounded by cliffs more than three hundred metres above the surrounding canyon country. The Green and Colorado rivers carve major drainage systems on either side, but the mesa top itself feels unexpectedly broad and open. That contrast is the essence of Canyonlands geology: relatively horizontal sedimentary layers were uplifted with the Colorado Plateau, then rivers and erosion cut downward through them. The result is not a mountain range built by folding, but a plateau dissected into isolated high surfaces. From here, ‘island’ is more than a poetic name. Cliffs function like shorelines, separating one accessible surface from a maze below.
