Most Canyonlands rock layers lie in comparatively orderly horizontal bands. Upheaval Dome breaks that pattern with a circular zone of dramatically tilted and deformed strata roughly five kilometres across. Geologists have debated two major explanations: rising salt from deep evaporite deposits, or a meteorite impact followed by collapse and rebound. National Park Service summaries note that more recent evidence supports the impact interpretation, although research continues. The point is not to preserve a mystery for tourism. Science works by comparing explanations against evidence and changing confidence as new data appear. Upheaval Dome is valuable because the landscape itself records an argument.
