Scotty’s Castle is one of Death Valley’s best legends, and the legend is explicitly a legend. Walter Scott, known as Death Valley Scotty, claimed that secret gold financed the mansion. In reality, Chicago insurance magnate Albert Mussey Johnson paid for the estate and owned it with his wife Bessie. Johnson and Scotty became unlikely friends, and Johnson often played along with the story because it attracted attention. Construction stopped in the early 1930s after a survey problem revealed that part of the work extended onto federal land, while the Depression tightened finances. The unfinished mansion is therefore a tourism story about performance: Scotty supplied the myth, Johnson supplied the money, and the public supplied fascination.
