Nine Mile Pond sits within the gradual transition from freshwater marsh toward mangrove and coastal environments.
That transition is not a sharp line. Salinity, water depth, hydroperiod and storm effects shift across space and through the year. Plants and animals sort themselves according to those conditions.
The Everglades therefore function less like separate habitat rooms and more like a gradient. Altering freshwater flow upstream can change salinity far downstream in Florida Bay.
This connectivity is one reason restoration is difficult. A water decision made far from the coast can affect fish nurseries, mangroves and seagrass kilometres away. The pond is local; the system it belongs to is regional.
