Keys View looks beyond the park into a much larger tectonic landscape. The long linear Coachella Valley below is strongly influenced by the San Andreas Fault system.
The fault marks a boundary between the Pacific and North American plates. Their relative movement generates earthquakes and helps organise the basins and mountain fronts of Southern California.
On clear days, the viewpoint also reveals how close protected desert lies to major urban and agricultural development. Air pollution and haze from regional sources can reduce visibility.
That contrast matters. Joshua Tree is not ecologically isolated simply because its boundary is drawn on a map. Air, climate, groundwater and wildlife move across that boundary continuously. The panorama is therefore both geological and political: a national park embedded in one of the most heavily engineered regions of the United States.
