Hurricane Ridge — A Mountain Range Built From the Seafloor

From Hurricane Ridge, the Olympic Mountains look like a conventional alpine range. Their origin is less conventional. Much of the rock began as sediment and volcanic material on the ocean floor. Plate movement later scraped and compressed those materials against the edge of North America, lifting them into mountains.

Glaciers then reworked the range. Ice widened valleys, sharpened ridges and left cirques and moraines. The modern glaciers are remnants of a much larger ice system that once extended far beyond the high peaks.

Hurricane Ridge also demonstrates how a road changes the social meaning of mountains. Mid-twentieth-century park development made high-country panoramas available to people who would never undertake a major climb. That was a democratic achievement, but it concentrated visitor pressure in fragile alpine terrain.

So the view contains three scales of history: tectonic construction over millions of years, glacial sculpture over thousands, and a road-based tourism landscape created within a few generations.
