Trail Ridge Road was built because the first automobile route across the park, Fall River Road, was too narrow, difficult to maintain and poorly suited to increasing traffic.

Construction began in 1929. Engineers chose a higher but more open route, with grades generally kept below seven percent. Several kilometres run above 3,350 metres, where the road crosses alpine tundra and areas of permafrost.

That created a design problem: build a modern highway while minimising scars in one of the park’s most fragile environments. Construction seasons were short, weather unpredictable and revegetation slow.

The road also follows a much older logic of crossing the range. Ute and Arapaho people had travelled over high passes long before automobiles. Modern roads did not invent the idea that the mountains were traversable; they industrialised it.

At the alpine visitor area, the astonishing achievement is not simply reaching this altitude. It is how much planning, excavation and annual maintenance are required to make the crossing feel routine.
