Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover built Rapidan Camp as a private presidential retreat at the meeting of mountain streams. Hoover valued fishing and isolation, and the camp offered relief from Washington during a presidency increasingly dominated by economic crisis after 1929. The cabins were modest by presidential standards, deliberately projecting outdoor simplicity. Yet the site also depended on roads, security and federal support. Rapidan therefore works as political theatre as well as personal refuge. A president associated with engineering and efficiency chose a mountain camp that presented him as self-reliant and close to nature while the nation confronted the Great Depression.
