St. Augustine — Colonial City to Civil Rights

St. Augustine — locally “Saint AW-gus-teen” — links Timucua homeland, the 1565 Spanish settlement, African freedom and slavery, coquina fortification, British and U.S. rule, tourism and the civil-rights campaigns of 1964. This route separates the real archaeology of the first Spanish settlement from the later Fountain of Youth legend and uses “oldest” claims carefully.
