Mangalem is the steep neighborhood that created Berat’s famous façade of closely stacked windows. The visual effect is memorable, but the houses were practical urban machines. Late Ottoman merchant and craft families needed storage, privacy, reception rooms and light on difficult terrain. Building up the slope allowed houses to capture daylight while fitting into a dense commercial city. UNESCO emphasizes Berat’s merchant and handicraft character, which distinguished it from more aristocratic Gjirokastër. That contrast is useful. Here wealth was tied strongly to trade and craft production, not only to large landholding. The neighborhood’s architecture therefore records an economy as much as an aesthetic. The windows are beautiful because merchants needed workable houses on a crowded hillside.
