The Red Mosque survives mostly as ruins and a minaret stump, but its position inside the castle is important. Ottoman Berat was not simply a Muslim town below a Christian fortress above. Islamic institutions also occupied the citadel itself. The mosque is generally associated with the early Ottoman period, after Berat came under Ottoman control in the fifteenth century. Its survival as a fragment also reminds us that monuments can lose their function without losing historical value. Rather than reconstructing a complete building in your imagination, read the site spatially: a mosque stood among older defenses and Christian churches, serving a population whose religious geography was more mixed than the tourist shorthand of separate quarters suggests.
