The Bazaar Mosque belongs to the eighteenth-century Ottoman city, but one of its most important chapters came much later. Communist Albania declared itself the world’s first atheist state in 1967 and closed or destroyed religious institutions across the country. Gjirokastër’s mosque survived, although its religious function was interrupted. That makes the building evidence of two very different political systems: Ottoman urban Islam and a twentieth-century state that tried to eliminate public religion altogether. When worship returned after communism, the mosque acquired another layer. The building’s value is therefore not simply age. It records how governments can redefine what a sacred structure is allowed to be.
