The Wachau’s terraced vineyards are cultural infrastructure. Stone walls, paths, cellar systems and generations of labour transformed steep slopes into productive wine land.
UNESCO recognition celebrates a cultural landscape, not untouched nature. From Krems, wine and river transport meet: vineyards generated export goods, while the Danube connected them to distant markets. The scenery is economically constructed beauty.
