Stein developed directly along the Danube and formed a complementary urban pair with Krems. Warehouses, landing places and merchant houses made river trade visible here in a way the uphill centre cannot.
The Danube moved bulky goods cheaply, but it was also dangerous and variable. Economic advantage always came with floods, shifting channels and the need for constant adaptation.
