Linz’s enormous main square reflects its role as a Danube trading and administrative centre. Goods moving along the river and roads needed markets, storage, inns and taxation.
The Baroque facades came later, but the square’s basic function was commercial. It reminds us that before Linz became synonymous with steel, it was already a city whose fortunes depended on movement through the Danube corridor.
