The old cathedral belongs to the era when Jesuit education and Catholic renewal reshaped Habsburg cities after the Reformation. Linz was a provincial capital where religion, schooling and state loyalty reinforced one another.
The church is less monumental than Vienna’s imperial architecture, but that is useful: it shows how confessional policy worked through ordinary regional institutions, not only through palaces.
