Two rivers made Steyr valuable. The Enns linked the town toward the Danube, while the Steyr connected valleys and production zones.
Heavy goods such as iron were expensive to move overland, so river geography shaped commercial opportunity. The picturesque confluence is therefore the city’s oldest piece of infrastructure: a natural transport network around which merchants, mills and workshops accumulated.
