The long main square displays the wealth of merchants who handled iron and other goods. Tall facades hide deep plots where commerce, storage and domestic life were combined.
Steyr’s medieval prosperity was not based on court patronage. It came from controlling flows of material between producers and buyers. The square is essentially the architectural balance sheet of that intermediary economy.
