In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Steyr’s metal tradition moved from merchant trade to industrial production. The Steyr works became famous for weapons and later for bicycles, vehicles and machinery.

Factory organisation changed the city: thousands of wage workers, rail links, housing and specialised engineering became more important than merchant houses. The product changed, but the old regional advantage—metalworking skill connected to transport—remained.
