Built in the early eighteenth century for Governor Claude de Ramezay, this residence later served many functions under different regimes.
During the American invasion of Canada in 1775–76, Montréal fell briefly to Continental forces, and American commissioners including Benjamin Franklin came north hoping to persuade Canadians to join the revolution. They failed.
That failure mattered. The thirteen colonies became the United States; the northern colonies remained outside it. Montréal was therefore part of the American Revolution, just not in the way American national memory usually tells the story.
Political identities in the 1770s were unsettled. Canada did not emerge because everyone north of the future border already knew they were Canadian.
