The silver dome of Marché Bonsecours announces nineteenth-century Montréal at full confidence. Inaugurated in 1847, it served as the city's main agricultural market for more than a century and also hosted civic functions.
Markets connected rural producers to an increasingly urban population. They were regulated spaces where authorities tried to impose standards of weight, cleanliness and order.
The building's scale tells you how rapidly Montréal was growing as an industrial and transportation hub tied to canals, railways and Atlantic trade.
Today the market sells crafts and hosts events. That is a familiar heritage transition: infrastructure for necessities becomes infrastructure for experience.
