A river once ran here. The Little Saint-Pierre flowed through the early settlement and eventually became an open sewer as Montréal grew. In the nineteenth century it was channelled underground; part of the old collector can now be visited through Pointe-à-Callière.
That hidden infrastructure tells an urban story monuments rarely do. Successful cities create waste as efficiently as they create wealth. Managing water, sewage and disease became essential as Montréal industrialized.
Religious communities nearby also played enormous roles in health and welfare before modern public systems existed.
When you see immaculate stone façades, remember the less photogenic city underneath: drains, docks, warehouses, epidemics and labour. Those systems are part of the heritage too.
