This is Montréal's archaeological ground zero. The museum complex sits beside the site where Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance helped establish Ville-Marie in 1642.
But archaeology reaches much further back. Excavations document Indigenous presence over thousands of years. The island was not discovered by the French; it was inserted into European imperial maps.
Ville-Marie began as a religious colony dedicated partly to missionary goals. It was also vulnerable, dependent on transatlantic supply and entangled in warfare and diplomacy involving Indigenous nations.
The remains of Fort Ville-Marie and Governor Callière's later residence resist a simple founder story. Montréal developed through overlapping systems: Indigenous exchange, French mission, fur trade, military alliance and settlement.
