The Gothic town hall was built on foundations of Charlemagne’s former palace hall. That reuse is almost too perfect: civic government literally occupied imperial ground.
Its Coronation Hall recalled the many German kings whose coronation celebrations were associated with Aachen. The building therefore let urban citizens claim proximity to imperial tradition while asserting their own municipal authority. It was damaged in the Second World War and reconstructed afterward.
