Aachen Cathedral accumulated relics and royal associations that drew pilgrims and reinforced the memory of Charlemagne long after his dynasty vanished. His remains were placed in a richly decorated shrine in the medieval period.
Relics made political memory sacred and portable within ritual. The treasury’s objects also show how rulers donated precious materials to institutions that preserved their reputations for centuries.
