Aachen’s hot springs were used long before Charlemagne and remained central to the city’s identity. The nineteenth-century Elisenbrunnen turned sulfurous thermal water into elegant spa architecture.
Roman bathers, medieval rulers and modern health tourists all valued the same geological resource for different reasons. The pavilion was destroyed in the Second World War and reconstructed in the 1950s, another reminder that Aachen’s historical appearance includes major postwar rebuilding.
