Ponttor is one of the surviving medieval gates from a much larger wall system. Gates protected Aachen, but they also controlled merchants, travellers and taxable goods.
The imperial image of the city depended on an ordinary urban economy that needed security and regulation. A gate is where grand political history met carts, tolls and closing hours.
