The Altpörtel was the western main gate of medieval Speyer. Its surviving tower escaped the destruction that devastated much of the city in 1689, making it a rare physical survivor of the earlier fortifications.
Look for a small iron standard near the passage: the Speyer “Normalschuh,” a local unit of length. That detail is easy to miss, but it reveals the city’s practical authority. Markets needed agreed measures. A gate controlled movement, a clock controlled time, and a standard measure controlled trade. Medieval urban government was built from such systems long before anyone used the phrase “municipal infrastructure.”
