Speyer was devastated in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession. Trinity Church, built between 1701 and 1717, belongs to the city that emerged from that destruction. Its wooden interior, galleries and painted biblical scenes created an explicitly Protestant worship space at a time when confessional identity still shaped politics and architecture.
The church was influenced by St Catherine’s in Frankfurt, where refugees from Speyer had worshipped during displacement. That connection gives the building an unusual emotional history: exile helped determine the model for reconstruction.
