The Fischmarkt was documented as a fish market in the Middle Ages, and the nearby Speyerbach supported trade in fish, timber and other goods. This is the ordinary economic layer that grand cathedral cities can hide. Clergy and emperors required a functioning market town around them.
The modern fountain commemorates the vanished fishing trade, turning an old workplace into heritage. That shift is common in European historic centres: activities that once smelled, shouted and blocked streets become sculptures, plaques and café terraces. Remembering the market restores some of the noise to the picture.
