Speyer’s nineteenth-century Memorial Church commemorates the “Protestation” associated with the 1529 Diet of Speyer, the event from which the term Protestant ultimately derives. The church is therefore not a Reformation-era survivor. It is a later monument built to turn a sixteenth-century political-religious episode into denominational memory.
That distinction matters. Historical monuments often tell us as much about the people who built the memorial as about the event being memorialised. The church reflects nineteenth-century Protestant confidence, competition and identity in a city already dominated visually by the imperial Catholic cathedral.
