Würzburg’s Old Main Bridge began in the late fifteenth century and remained the city’s only Main crossing until the nineteenth. That makes it less a scenic balcony than a piece of economic infrastructure: carts, pilgrims, officials and goods all had to pass this narrow point.
The statues came later, mainly in the eighteenth century, when the bridge was transformed into a ceremonial approach lined with saints and rulers. Today the combination feels timeless, but it actually joins different eras and purposes. Stand here and look from river to fortress and cathedral city. Würzburg’s political geography is unusually legible: water below, old princely power on the hill, and the commercial-religious city on the opposite bank.
