The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Kilian and was begun in the eleventh century. Its long Romanesque body gives Würzburg a visual link to the era before the prince-bishops embraced Baroque spectacle. Yet the building has never been frozen in one style. Chapels, furnishings and later interventions accumulated, and wartime destruction forced extensive reconstruction.
That layered history matters because cathedrals are institutions that outlive architectural fashions. Bishops were buried here, liturgy changed here, and the city rebuilt around it. The result is not a perfectly preserved medieval object but a structure whose continuity has repeatedly depended on adaptation.
