The hilltop castle controlled the settlement and routes below, but the structure visitors see today is heavily ruined. It served military functions across centuries and was damaged repeatedly, including during the Peninsular War.
The elevated position explains why Burgos developed where it did: defensible high ground beside a river corridor and major roads. Later urban prestige shifted downhill toward cathedral, markets and civic institutions.
That movement is easy to miss if you only walk the monumental centre. The castle represents an earlier logic of urban power, when command of terrain mattered more than a ceremonial square.
