The bronze equestrian monument to Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, El Cid, was inaugurated in 1955. That date matters. The statue is not medieval evidence; it is a twentieth-century interpretation of a medieval figure.
The historical Rodrigo served different rulers, fought both Muslim and Christian opponents and built his own power in Valencia. Later epic tradition simplified that complicated career into an ideal of Christian Castilian heroism.
