Construction of Burgos Cathedral began in 1221 under Bishop Mauricio and King Ferdinand III. French Gothic ideas arrived through church and court networks, but later generations kept adding chapels, spires, sculpture and furnishings.
The result is not one thirteenth-century design frozen in time. Fifteenth-century architects from Cologne helped create the famous openwork spires, while the Constables’ Chapel added another layer of elite patronage.
El Cid and his wife Jimena were reburied here in the twentieth century, linking medieval epic memory to a cathedral built by many other patrons. The building became a container for national memory long after its foundation.
