The Santa María gate became Burgos’s monumental entrance from the bridge over the Arlanzón. Its sixteenth-century façade displays figures associated with Castilian history, including emperors, judges and El Cid.
That sculptural programme transformed a defensive threshold into a lesson about political identity. Anyone entering the city encountered an official-looking genealogy of Burgos and Castile.
Gates therefore did more than regulate traffic. They could stage memory. The façade tells us as much about sixteenth-century ideas of legitimate ancestry as it does about the medieval people represented on it.
