Casa del Cordón was built in the late fifteenth century for the powerful Velasco family. The carved Franciscan cord around the doorway gives the palace its familiar name.
Important court events unfolded here. The Catholic Monarchs received Christopher Columbus in Burgos after his second voyage, and later diplomatic encounters connected the palace to dynastic politics across Europe.
The lesson is not that one house “changed the world.” It is that Burgos possessed the administrative and commercial weight to host people moving through imperial networks. A noble residence could temporarily function like a diplomatic chamber because politics travelled with the court.
