Girona Cathedral grew over an earlier Romanesque church, and its construction stretched across centuries. The most dramatic decision was the vast single Gothic nave, one of the widest of its kind. Medieval builders debated whether such a span was structurally and aesthetically acceptable before committing to it.
The result is not stylistic purity. A Romanesque cloister and tower survive beside later Gothic and Baroque work. The building is therefore a record of institutional persistence: bishops and chapters inherited unfinished problems and solved them according to changing tastes and engineering confidence.
Its famous steps came later still, turning the west front into an urban stage.
