Girona’s Jewish quarter, the Call, was home to a significant community from the Middle Ages until the expulsion of Jews from the kingdoms of the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. The museum occupies part of the former Jewish neighbourhood and interprets community life through archaeology, inscriptions and written records.
Girona was associated with the scholar Moses ben Nahman, known as Nahmanides, but a responsible guide should not turn every doorway into a biographical site. Much of the quarter’s value lies in documented urban patterns rather than surviving buildings with secure original functions.
The museum makes absence itself legible after forced departure reshaped the neighbourhood.
