MUSAC opened in 2005 as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Castile and León. Architects Mansilla and Tuñón designed a low, fragmented building whose coloured glass façade draws inspiration from the colour range of historic stained glass without copying Gothic architecture.
That is the key idea: heritage cities do not remain healthy by reproducing old styles forever. New institutions need their own architectural language.
The museum also changes León’s cultural map by pulling visitors beyond the cathedral-and-pilgrimage circuit. A commercially viable historic city is not only a preserved centre; it is a place still producing culture that future generations may decide to preserve.
