León developed from the base of Legio VII Gemina, permanently established here in the first century AD. Sections of Roman wall were strengthened and reused through late antiquity and the Middle Ages, so the defensive line became part of the later city rather than an abandoned archaeological site.
At the Arco de la Cárcel, later construction sits directly on that inherited boundary. This is a useful place to understand León’s name: “León” ultimately derives from “legio,” legion.
The Roman army shaped street geometry and fortification long after imperial command disappeared. Military planning became urban planning by inheritance.
