Mérida

Mérida is not simply a collection of Roman ruins. Augusta Emerita was a provincial capital whose theatres, roads, waterworks and cult buildings were designed to make imperial government visible. Later Visigothic and Islamic layers reused that infrastructure. This guide follows the city as a working capital across two millennia rather than freezing it in one Roman century.
