The House of the Mithraeum preserves rooms, mosaics and domestic arrangements from an elite Roman residence. Its modern name comes from finds connected with the cult of Mithras discovered nearby, not from proof that the house itself was a Mithraic temple.
That distinction matters. Archaeological labels often begin as practical shorthand and can become more certain in popular retelling than the evidence warrants.
Here the stronger story is domestic inequality. Large houses could organize reception rooms, private quarters, service areas and decorated floors on a scale unavailable to most inhabitants. Provincial prosperity was real, but it was never evenly distributed.
