Tarraco’s theatre occupied the lower city near the port, where commerce, movement and entertainment overlapped. It was built in the Augustan period and altered over time before losing its theatrical function in late antiquity.
Compared with the amphitheatre, the theatre could host drama, music and ceremonial performance rather than combat. The distinction matters because Roman “entertainment” was not one category. Different buildings organized different audiences and social rituals.
Industrial development in the modern era damaged parts of the site, adding another layer to its history: archaeology had to compete with the economic value of urban land.
