The cathedral stands on the highest part of ancient Tarraco, within the zone once associated with the imperial cult. Medieval builders therefore occupied a location already designed to dominate the city symbolically.
The present church developed from the twelfth century and combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. Archaeology beneath and around the precinct reveals earlier phases, including Roman structures.
It is tempting to describe this simply as Christianity replacing pagan Rome. The urban reality is more complex: prestigious topography survived while institutions changed. Power kept choosing the same hill because generations had already taught residents to read it as the city’s ceremonial summit.
