The cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror. The Bayeux Tapestry was probably connected with the cathedral and may have been displayed here on important occasions, though the exact original display context remains debated.
Fire and rebuilding transformed the church, producing the Romanesque and Gothic mixture visible today.
That relationship between textile and cathedral matters. The tapestry did not begin life as a museum masterpiece detached from ritual. It belonged to a world in which bishops, aristocrats and churches were major producers and keepers of public memory.
