The Baron Gérard Museum of Art and History occupies the former episcopal palace beside the cathedral. Its collections range from archaeology and lace to painting and porcelain, deliberately widening Bayeux beyond 1066 and 1944.
That breadth matters because globally famous events can flatten local history. People here made textiles after the tapestry, governed markets after William, and developed industries and tastes unrelated to invasion.
The museum’s setting adds another layer: a bishop’s residence has become a civic institution. Objects once separated by church, household and workshop are now rearranged to tell a regional story.
